New Coach Credential Verification Procedure

Dear Coach:

As you probably realize by now, the Coaching Education Program nationally, and in Michigan, has adopted new education requirements. For many new coaches, the new requirements are much simpler than before. For example, coaches only need to attend one clinic per season at most, where in the past some coaches had to attend 2, 3, or even 4. We've also added age-specific online training as part of the American Development Model program.

As we move to the mid-part of the season, the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association (MAHA) is preparing to qualify teams and coaches to participate in District/State/National tournaments. Due to the newness of the coaching program requirements, MAHA is asking association leaders to check credentials well in advance, to ensure your ability to participate for the full 2011-12 season. The leadership of MAHA approved this on November 4.

The information below will be sent to all our local programs. I thought you should be aware of it as well.

I hope that your season is going well, that your players are having a great time, and that if you attend a coaching clinic, you will thank the volunteers who run our program here in Michigan.

Yours in hockey,

Jack Witt
USA Hockey
Michigan District Coach in Chief

Michigan Amateur Hockey Association Coach Credential Verification Procedure

MAHA wants to ensure that no coach gets disqualified and removed from a roster for not completing the annual educational requirements. The local hockey organizations are responsible for ensuring that the coaches know about the deadline; and the organizations need to verify that any uncertified coaches are removed from the roster so as not to jeopardize the eligibility of players and teams. This procedure should be followed annually to ensure that.

  • By December 1st of the year, the hockey organization Sub-Registrar, using the organization's CyberSport software, is to update the coaches' education information by downloading this information from the USA Hockey database.
  • After this update is complete, the sub-registrar will re-print the rosters of all the organization's teams, without addresses, showing the updated coaches' information.
  • Provide these rosters to the organization's Coaching Director (President optional).
  • Prior to December 7th, the organization's Coaching Director shall review the rosters and create a list of coaches who do not yet have the proper credentials.
  • Once this list has been prepared, using the USA Hockey Coaching education database, the Coaching Director will verify the coaches' credentials.
  • The Coaching Director shall contact those coaches on his list and advise them that they must take the required education prior to December 31st or they will be removed from the teams roster effective January 1st.
  • The Coaching Director shall provide his list to the organization Sub-Registrar (President optional).
  • On January 3rd, the organization Sub-Registrar will perform the information update in CyberSport and reprint the rosters of the coaches on the list provided by the Coaching Director and provide these rosters to the Coaching Director for his verification.
  • The organization's Coaching Director is to provide a list of those coaches without proper credentials, to both the Sub-Registrar and the President. Said coaches will be removed from the team's roster.
  • The organization's president will contact those coaches advising them that they are no longer part of the team's coaching staff and are not to participate in any future practices or games.
  • The organization's president will certify to the local MAHA District Council that they have reviewed the coaching credentials of their teams and provide a list of coaches removed from rosters.

Letter from USA Hockey

TO: USA Hockey Member Associations

CC:Board of Directors, Affiliate Presidents, District Personnel

FROM: Dave Ogrean, Executive Director
Peter Lindberg, Vice President/Chairman, Legal Council

DATE: June 22, 2010

USA Hockey has enjoyed another successful year, highlighted by continued growth at our entry-level age group, the further roll-out and embracing of the American Development Model, and unparalleled results in international competition.  Yet there is nothing more vital to the continued advancement of our sport that making it safe.

Attached for your review and implementation is a new policy on Locker Room Supervision that was passed overwhelmingly at our recent Board of Directors meeting.

Please forward this (or download and make copies) to everyone in your association who is in a leadership position or is responsible for the communication and implementation of policies and procedures.

A couple of notes on this policy... our youth players need to know that their hockey environment is safe. This policy ensures that a responsible adult is looking over their shoulders at all times. Of course, all locker room monitors should be gender correct and the co-ed locker room policy must be followed as described in the current USA Hockey Guide. Also, all monitors must be screened and otherwise meet all USA Hockey screening standards.

In the near future we will be sending you additional information about all USA Hockey Policies including Screening, Zero Tolerance and Gender Equity (co-ed locker room).

Blue Pucks Mandatory for Mites

BLUE PUCKS MANDATORY FOR MITES

It has been brought to our attention that some associations in D7 are not currently using the blue pucks for all Mite and Cross-Ice programs. This is a USA Hockey rule, therefore, all associations MUST comply. Failure to follow this rule could result in hearings and possible suspensions. If you do not currently use the blue puck for your Mite and Cross-Ice programs, you need to make the change immediately. Thank You.

Mike Corso

D7 Chairman
